New Recording - now available

The Chaconne is the subject of the new lute CD from Jan Grüter: "Chacona".

Chacona, a Caribbean island, a Latin American paradise, A heavenly dream. Perhaps the chaconne originally came from Latin America. Or perhaps the longing for this paradise inspired the S!panish to make this music. The origin is unclear. Again and again it is heard in the refrain of the sung Chaconna "Vita bona, Vita bona, arora vamonos a Chaconna" written by Lope de Vega in 1602- Here´s to the good life on Chaconna ! Besides the song texts, there are early references to the chaconne that are morallising condemnations of a seductive dance mentioned together with the Zarabande , which was punishable by law during a period of time.

The examples of the baroque dance go from the guitar ciaconas of the early italian baroque, french chaconnes from Visée/Lully and Gallot to the monumental Chaconne from J.S. Bach for violin.
